Zach Braff, what happened? Here I was, all excited to get Joshua Radin’s new album in the mail after you gushed like a little school girl over his music on your blog and and...I generally dislike it. Not hate, just a kind of blah. We’ve all seen Garden State. We all LOVE Garden State, so we all know you have decent taste in music. Hell, on your blog you even claim you are listening to Sufjan Stevens and Ryan Adams, but tell me- was Joshua your friend before you started to like his music or the other way around?

Individually, Radin’s songs are ok. Watching the YouTube (below) of Braff directing his video for the song ’Closer’, I started to kind of dig it but watch the video and then listen to the album and you will see that the songs don’t vary much. They all feature Radin’s breathy singing with a female vocalist accompanying him most of the time. While for a couple of songs, that would have been ok, on an entire album it makes it nearly unlistenable (in fact, it took me several attempts and I’ve only just gotten to the end while driving around doing errands today). There is, however, one tune that stands out as the single breathy track to like and that is ’Everything’ll be alright.’ It’s slightly faster than the others and talks about leaving a girl in New York- I’m a sucker for some New York imagery, especially when it has to do with heartache.

I am a big soundtrack fan. Not only do most of them give you a mix of music that span different genres, but soundtracks are a way to discover an artist or band that you had not known about before. Also, artists use soundtracks to release material that might not have been a fit on one of their albums. It's always great when it is your favorite artists that do this. So I've decided to do a mix of songs that have appeared in soundtracks. The criteria that I've set up is that the song had to appear in a movie or on the released soundtrack, and I chose to include soundtracks that were released between the years 2000 and 2007. While selecting songs, I had enough to break it up in to several parts. So this will be either a two or three parter. Hope you enjoy, and be sure to include some of your soundtrack favorites in the comments.

Well, friends, today this humble little site turns two years old. I'm not very good at anniversary type posts - I can never figure out just what to say or quite how to say it, a fact driven home all over again as I sat down to pen this post, starting and stopping and re-starting and deleting way too many times before finally settling on this - and so I'm using it more as a post to mark the day, rather than a super fabulous anniversary post full of goodies. In fact, the only "goodies" to be found in this post are some songs (see below) that I've discovered and come to love almost entirely as a result of running this site, as that's what this experience has always been most about to me, finding new music to become obsessed with and than passing it along to as many people as possible. So, mostly I just want to say thank you to each and every one of you who take the time to read this site and make it some small part of your life. To those of you that have been reading since the beginning, thank you for hanging in there for so long, and to those of you I've managed to win over along the way, I'm quite glad to have you around here as well.

Anyways, The Broken Family Band are a four piece alt-country band from Cambridge. That�s the Cambridge in the south of England, which gives them even more of a unique appeal. The UK isn�t known for it�s top notch country bands, so it�s nice to see at least one band giving it a shot. They have released at least four albums and two EPs, regularly play live, and more impressively, have still managed to hold down their day jobs.

They make a kind of jangly country music, but without ever crossing the line into just downright awful generic country. The songs are melodic and their lyrics insightful. I could go on trying to describe their sound, but I think their Myspace page describes it best: �Sounds like Pavement gently wrestling with Buck Owens on a carpet of ironic bulls***�. And if you aren�t convinced by that, you don�t have a soul.

A new track from the new M.I.A. album Kala, "Paper Planes", as I’ve heard one other blogger describe it, could quite possibly have the most catchy, but simultaneously hardest to sing along to, chorus of all time.

The beat, replete with finger-snaps, is simple and infectious. The lyrics are trademark M.I.A., and the chorus vocals are an amazing contrast to the chorus (and verse) content.

A great track, really.

Context: Though his last few releases have been hit or miss Ben Harper’s 1997 album ‘The Will To Live’ carries itself as a strong set, one which introduced Harper to a wider audience as it was his first ever charting release. One of the most touching and inspiring songs on the album is “Glory & Consequence;” in it Harper battles his own insecurities and confronts his fears - something that I’ve found great solace in over the years. One of the most difficult things that a person has to confront is losing love and without any reservation, I associate this song with those feelings. Mere months after graduating high school, I found myself in a new country, deep in a stranglehold of love. I look back, having recently found myself feeling those emotions again and again found reprieve in Harper’s words, “I would rather me be lonely and you have someone to hold / I’m not as scared of dying as I am of growing old.“ Result: Something deep beneath the surface of Harper’s lyrics is a sound that comforts me and that sentiment is no more truthful than with this song. “Glory and Consequence” is a song that I first heard driving around one night knowing that things were souring with my girlfriend and it consoled me, helping me understand that the feelings I had were normal and it was alright to let go. Now I find myself letting go again and the soundtrack, it seems, hasn’t changed.

The biggest difference between Rocky Votolato’s recent release, The Brag and Cuss, and previous release, Makers, is the addition of a backing band. The backing band has given The Brag and Cuss a fuller sound. Other than that, Rocky has stayed true to the sound and lyrical styling of Makers. He wrote most of the songs for The Brag and Cuss while on the road touring. The long strain of being on the road and away from family is the underlying theme of most of the songs on the album. My personal favorite is the song "Postcard From Kentucky." If you were a fan of Makers, you’ll like the follow-up.
